OUR 2023 CCB KEYNOTE SPEAKER Richard Soto In 2016, Richard Soto opened the Chicano Research Center in Stockton, California. A Vietnam War veteran, Mr. Soto has been collecting books since his return from military service. After retiring as a high school counselor, Richard Soto opened the Chicano Resource Center that holds over 20,000 resources representing an array of time periods, genres, and mediums focused on the Hispanic experience. The Chicano Research Center has supported graduate students with their research, hosted writers and poets, and now offers guitar classes- becoming a community center for literature, research, and cultural celebration. Richard Soto has been recognized for his service to his community as an educator, and “for his bravery as a Brown Beret medic during the Chicano Moratorium.” (Wick, 2019) His life work and commitment to collecting and sharing the Mexican American experience through his collection vividly reflects our CCB mission. Richard Soto is a “keeper of our common history” and an “activist in our common future”. |
